Release 1

This version first released with CUA Creative Arts and Culture Training Package Version 5.0.

Application

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to develop finished observational drawings for different art, craft and design purposes. It involves developing and refining drawing techniques, exploring media and tools to achieve desired outcomes and finalising own observational drawings.

The unit applies to those who work in any area of visual communication and design who use observational drawing skills in their work. They possess well-developed manual observational drawing techniques but may also use digital tools to produce drawings.

No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Unit Sector

Visual Communication – Art, Craft and Design

Elements and Performance Criteria

ELEMENT

PERFORMANCE CRITERIA

Elements describe the essential outcomes.

Performance criteria describe the performance needed to demonstrate achievement of the element.

1. Develop and refine observational drawing technique

1.1 Investigate specific techniques and considerations for observational drawing

1.2 Explore ways to achieve perspective in drawings

1.3 Experiment with use of lines and edges

1.4 Examine ways to recognise and accurately represent space

1.5 Observe and depict light and shade using different techniques

1.6 Identify problems in own drawing technique and explore ways to resolve them

2. Explore media and tools for observational drawings

2.1 Determine how different media and tools can create different effects in drawings

2.2 Select and use applicable media to achieve the desired outcome

3. Produce finished observational drawings

3.1 Select subjects for observational drawing projects based on needs of own work

3.2 Create finished drawings that show command of observational drawing techniques and applicable selection of media

3.3 Evaluate own observational drawing in terms of key objectives

Foundation Skills

This section describes those language, literacy, numeracy and employment skills that are essential to performance but not explicit in the performance criteria.

S KILL

DESCRIPTION

Learning

  • Identifies own skill needs and may initiate a learning strategy to improve work performance

Reading

  • Analyses visual material and identifies content required for own work production

Oral communication

  • Elicits feedback from others using detailed and clear language

Self-management

  • Takes responsibility for implementation of safe work practices for specific drawing techniques

Teamwork

  • Seeks feedback from others and considers its value to the improvement of future work performance

Planning and organising

  • Takes a systematic approach to development and refinement of drawing techniques using practice and experimentation
  • Informs decisions about media and tools to achieve required effects using research outcomes
  • Plans production of finished drawings including decisions about subject matter, objectives, media and technique

Problem-solving

  • Determines problem solving methods to improve drawing techniques

Release 1

This version first released with CUA Creative Arts and Culture Training Package Version 5.0.

Performance Evidence

The candidate must demonstrate the ability to complete the tasks outlined in the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit, including evidence of the ability to:

  • produce observational drawings for at least three different projects.

In the course of the above, the candidate must:

  • show well-developed technique using accurate perspective and depiction of light, shadow and space
  • select media and tools to suit the needs of a particular drawing project
  • use self-evaluation and feedback from others to identify and pursue further skill development.

Knowledge Evidence

The candidate must be able to demonstrate knowledge to complete the tasks outlined in the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit, including knowledge of:

  • techniques and considerations for observational drawings that include:
  • accurate perception of shape
  • approaches to line and edges
  • approaches to perspective
  • coordination of hand and eye
  • depiction of light and shade
  • representation of space
  • work health and safety requirements relating to observational drawing
  • how tools, media and techniques can be used to achieve particular effects in observational drawings.

Assessment Conditions

Skills in this unit must be demonstrated in a workplace or simulated environment where the conditions are typical of those in a working environment in this industry.

This includes access to:

  • information sources
  • drawing materials and equipment
  • interaction with applicable people.

Assessors of this unit must satisfy the requirements for assessors in applicable vocational educational and training legislation, frameworks and/or standards.
